Bachata’s evolution

From the rural bars of the Dominican Republic to the glittering stages of international dance festivals, bachata has undergone one of the most dramatic glow-ups in Latin dance. Here is a look at the journey of this soulful genre and how it became a social dance sensation worldwide!

The Roots of “Música de Amargue”

Bachata was born in the 1950s – 60s in the rural countryside and urban shantytowns of the Dominican Republic. Originally, it wasn’t even called bachata; it was known as música de amargue – “bitter music”. Deeply influenced by Spanish bolero, Cuban son, and merengue, it was the soundtrack of the working class, played on acoustic guitars and bongos to tell raw stories of heartbreak and social struggle.

For decades, the genre was heavily stigmatized by the Dominican elite, who viewed it as “low-class” or “vulgar.” During the Trujillo dictatorship, it was pushed to the fringes of society, surviving primarily in brothels and rural “bachatas” (backyard parties) where its soulful, melancholic identity was forged.

Evolution of Rhythm and Movement

As the political and social landscape of the Dominican Republic shifted in the 1980s, so did the music. The introduction of the electric guitar, pioneered by artists like Blas Durán, gave bachata a faster, more “popping” sound that moved it from the shadows to the mainstream. The dance evolved alongside the music; what began as a close-embrace, bolero-style box step transformed into a more rhythmic and syncopated movement.

While the Dominican Style (sometimes called Traditional Style) remains focused on intricate, playful footwork and rapid-fire hip movements, bachata eventually branched out into various global interpretations incorporating elements from Salsa, Zouk and Hip Hop.

A Global Phenomenon

The 2000s saw bachata explode into a worldwide obsession, thanks to the “Urban Bachata” movement pioneered by groups like Aventura and their frontman, Romeo Santos. Trendsetting artists like Ataca y La Alemana brought bachata to a burgeoning social media audience, exploding its popularity on the dance floor. By blending traditional rhythms with R&B and Pop sensibilities, bachata became more accessible to a younger, global audience. This musical shift eventually birthed “Bachata Sensual” in Spain during the 2010s, a style characterized by fluid body waves and circular motions.

In 2019, bachata was recognised by UNESCO and added to their list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity

Today, bachata is arguably the most popular Latin social dance globally. From Seoul to Stockholm, you can find Bachata nights where dancers of all backgrounds can connect thanks to the genre’s infectious rhythms and emotional depth.

Why Choose Bachata?

For someone stepping onto the dance floor for the first time, bachata is often much more approachable than its cousins, salsa or kizomba. Salsa can be intimidating with its high-speed tempo and complex geometry, requiring quick reflexes and a sharp ear for polyrhythms. On the other hand, kizomba requires a level of grounded, intimate connection and technical “frame” that can feel a bit intense for a novice.

Bachata hits the “Goldilocks” zone: its timing is incredibly intuitive, and the basic step is something most people can master in a single lesson. It offers the perfect balance of rhythmic fun and social connection without the steep learning curve of more technical genres, while offering branching depth and complexity for those who love to dig deeper!

Terms and Conditions

Overview

Classes missed during a term are assumed to be forfeit as a “no show”. Barring exceptional circumstances, make-up classes or pro-rata credits will not be issued

Multi-class packs have a 12 month expiry from date of purchase. Any remaining classes unclaimed at the end of this period are considered as “no show” and cannot be rolled over further

If you have been asked to leave class for any of the below reasons, this is also considered a forfeit of the remainder of the class and no refunds will be issued:

• Aggressive or other antisocial behaviour
• Inappropriate phsyical contact or verbal comments towards another class member
• Repeated disruptive behaviour
• Attempted soliciting of students for another dance school

Here at Bailar, we like to shake things up in the studio every once in awhile… so in Term 4, we’re introducing Bachata Practica to Thursday nights!

⁠⁠ What’s a Practica? ⁠⁠

While we believe that social dancing is key to improving your dancing, it can be intimidating for dancers (particularly beginners) to make that first step into a crowded club. ⁠⁠

Practicas provide a safe environment for students to practise what they’ve learnt. There’s zero judgment about your dancing as everyone is working to improve themselves. You can also count on our instructors and assistants to help you with anything you might be struggling with. ⁠⁠

How can I get better at dancing bachata?

Welcome to part 1 of a running series of tips and tricks for getting better at bachata – and other forms of dance!

Whether you’ve just started out or have been doing classes for ages and feel like you’ve plateaued, at some point in your dance journey you’ll find yourself saying “how can I get better?”

As with any seemingly impossible task, the best way to tackle this is to break it into smaller, more manageable pieces. First of all, what exactly do you want to get better at?

Social dancing?

Of course the best way to improve your dancing is to just do more of it! So simple, yet this is something we end up having to remind our beginner and intermediate students alike.

You may have heard of the 10,000 hours rule for mastery of a subject, but if that seems too daunting why not aim for 100 hours for proficiency?  Going to your one hour bachata class once a week will take you a couple of years to gain competency, but if you manage to up that to one hour a day, that goal is now achievable in 3 months!

Of course, it’s difficult to find somewhere to get a full hour of bachata social dancing every day, but getting out for a social event for a couple of hours a week will definitely get you towards your target hours much, much faster

Every Thursday at 8:30pm after class we run our 100% Bachata practica, giving everyone the opportunity to dance bachata – without having to wait between salsa and kizomba songs!

Looking better while dancing?

You’ve finally seen a video of yourself in action and you’re shocked to discover that your moves are nowhere near as suave and flashy as you thought! While your brain is great (or just okay) at stashing away all the moves and patterns you’ve asked it to, it’s very poor at judging what all your various muscles, joints and body parts are doing at any given point during a dance – especially if you’re heavily focused on keeping time or what moves are coming next (we’ll cover these off another time)!

You need to get lots of solo practice under your belt to understand how to show off your form with pizzazz. Establishing a mind-muscle connection is the key to training your body to do what your mind’s eye is imagining. Your trusty mirror will help you immensively with immediate feedback on how your body rolls, movements and isolations are looking – from the front at least! For most people, their main mirror time is in the bathroom when brushing their teeth or getting ready to go out. Why not utilise this time to practice your basic footwork? It will also encourage you to take smaller steps!

You can also ask a friend to film you when practicing turns and other angles which may be difficult to see in a mirror. If you’re shy, a tripod or conveniently placed book can prop up your phone, allowing you to film yourself

An overlooked place to practice your upper body isolations is in the car! In the comfort and privacy of your next commute, try moving JUST your ribcage, shoulders or obliques without your hands being affected. This is a great way to learn how to access those muscle groups while training to keep your arms and hands still, which keeps a clear connection with your partner and prevents mixed signals or interrupted frames. If you’re unsure whether you can pull this off safely, maybe wait for the next red light

Musicality?

Have you ever watched your favourite dance couple’s latest videos and been wowed as they hit every break, buildup and instrumental at EXACTLY the right time and wished you could do the same? Keep in mind that these guys are professionals and dedicate a LOT of time to training. Besides knowing each other’s natural rhythms, they very likely have also rehearsed this routine a countless number of times to make it look SO spontaneous and amazing.

As a regular, non-professional dancer who is just doing this as a hobby, you may not have the hours to spare or dedicated partner to train with, but you can help your musicality along by just listening to more bachata whenever you can!

If you’ve got bachata music playing while you brush your teeth, in the shower, in the car, on your headphones at work, you’re absorbing hours of rhythms and melodies into your subconscious. If you find yourself nodding your head or tapping your toes along to the beat, even better! This is your body starting to automatically tune into the rhythms that you’re going to be dancing to.

Bachata is polyrhythmic, meaning each of the individual instruments’ rhythms unify to form a unified ‘bachata rhythm’. It takes a lot of practice to identify these instruments and the different rhythms they make. The bachata breakdown album (available on Spotify!) is an excellent resource to help train your ears, and after giving it a listen you’ll learn to appreciate your favourite bachata songs in a whole new way.

If all else fails, even just rote memorisation of songs as they hit repeat will help you to identify repeating patterns, instruments or breaks that will give you a hint when to pull off JUST the right move

Where to social dance in Perth?

You’ve finally attended enough classes that you’re feeling confident to take the next step and try social dancing bachata out in public! The next question is… where?

In years gone by, you may have encountered the classic silo problem. Each school would obviously heavily promote events within its own student base, but students from other schools may never hear of them, or even worse – been actively discouraged from intermingling with “the enemy”!

Nowadays, the Perth Latin scene is vibrantly mixed and there are many events to choose from to dance Salsa, Bachata or Kizomba (sometimes referred to as SBK to save typing). Of course, it can be hard to tell how much bachata you’ll actually get at any given SBK night.

Your best place to search for SBK events to attend is the Facebook group Where to dance Salsa Bachata Kizomba tonight in Perth. The group is well moderated to limit spammers, and events from any school or organiser are welcome.

There are also regular weekly social dancing options available in Perth, the below are our favourites for bachata!

Sunday:

Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre (The Esplanade, Scarborough WA 6019)

Social dancing from 5:00pm, run by WAZouk

Featured in the New York Times’ 2019 list of 52 places to go, the ‘Sandpit’ is the best way to start (or finish, depending how you count) your week!

Watch the sun set over the Indian Ocean as you dance. A mix of 2x Salsa 2x Bachata and 2x Kizomba will give you plenty of opportunities to practice, and meet people from all the different Latin dance schools in Perth! $5 entry

Tuesday:

Social dancing from 9:00pm, run by Ritmo Caliente Dance Academy

A true SBK night playing a mix of 2x Salsa and 2x Bachata. $10 entry

Mustang Bar (46 Lake St, Northbridge WA 6003)

Social dancing from 9:45pm, run by Danza Loca

Mainly a Cuban salsa night, you can get a few bachatas sprinkled throughout the night and even a Kizomba if you’re lucky. Free entry

“But I just want to dance bachata…”

Unfortunately, unlike other cities Perth doesn’t yet have a regular weekly social night with bachata as the core focus.

Because of this, every Thursday after class we run our Bachata Pura practica to help our students (and everyone else who wants to attend!) enjoy a whole night of bachata.

As you may have guessed from the name, it’s a 100% bachata social practice session, starting at 8:30pm right after level 2! We play bachata of all styles, from classic bachata artists, modern up and comers, and sensual remix sensations like DJ Tronky.

Bachata Class Timetable

Suitable for people with no prior dance experience, level 1 classes establish the foundations of bachata timing, connection and dancefloor etiquette to give you the skills to start social dancing immediately, while building your confidence to tackle the levels ahead. No partners required, as we rotate often during every class!

If you’re not sure where to start, Level 1 is the best place!

Level 2 builds on the core concepts to develop more complex moves, dips and styling, and progresses to more challenging patterns. You will be introduced to syncopation and musicality concepts that will help you better engage with the music as you dance, and develop your own dazzling style!

Terms and conditions:
Terms: Classes missed during a term are assumed to be forfeit as a “no show”. Barring exceptional circumstances, make-up classes or pro-rata credits will not be issued   Packs: Packs have 12 month validity from date of purchase. Any remaining classes unclaimed at the end of this period are considered as “no show” and cannot be rolled over further

About

Our instructors

Des has over 19 years experience in Salsa, Bachata and Kizomba, and 15 years teaching all levels from total beginners and upwards. He has trained across the world under teachers in Australia, USA and Europe, including bachata pioneers Jorjet Alcocer, Juan Ruiz, Ataca & La Alemana, and Daniel & Desiree. He believes that dance should be accessible to everybody and is a language that anyone can learn. His passion is teaching people to discover their connection to music and starting them off on their own dance journeys!

Dee has been actively dancing and teaching for the last 6 years. Her love of dance started with Cuban Salsa. She was part of the competition team representing Western Australia in the 2018 Australian Rueda Championship. The team placed first and Dee was awarded the Best Female Dancer in the Professional category.  Her love for music exposed her to various other dance styles such as Bachata and Kizomba. She believes that dance is a beautiful form of communication and anyone should be able to express themselves artistically. Her journey into the dance world has been breathtaking and she is excited to be able to help others on their own amazing discovery of dance and music.

What is Bachata?

Originating in the Dominican Republic, bachata is a playful and romantic style of music and dance which has exploded in popularity across the world

From its humble roots as a forbidden folk dance for the “common people” to dazzling performances by international superstars, bachata offers something for everyone!

Whether you’re an absolute beginner deciding on which Latin dance style to start with, or you’re a dancer who is keen to try something new, bachata offers an easy entry point with an infinite amount of progression.

Our syllabus goes beyond just turn patterns, covering partner connection techniques, body isolations, musicality and Dominican-style footwork variations!

We always do our best to accommodate mid-term drop-ins, but please be aware that depending on your level of experience you may be more comfortable joining in earlier in the term!

Our classes run Thursday nights, with Level 1 Beginners classes starting at 7:00pm and Level 2 Improvers classes at 8:00pm. Be sure to check the class page to see where in the term we are!

If it’s your first time, please arrive a little early to allow time to sign in! Doors open 6:45pm

You can also save time (and money!) by signing up online before arriving!

No partners necessary! Our classes rotate frequently, with teachers standing by to help out at any time

A comfy pair of shoes (not too grippy), a smile, and your confirmation email if you have pre-booked online!

Our syllabus is based on the Island Touch style developed by Ataca y La Alemana, featuring stronger Traditional Bachata influences compared to other fusion styles.

Our Level 2 classes also incorporate the Sensual style of Daniel y Desiree, to make you a more versatile dancer on the social dance floor!

If you have absolutely zero experience, it would greatly benefit you to try to catch us on Week 1 of term, where we go through the basic steps in detail

We understand that may not always be possible, so please let us know when you drop in and we’ll do our best to get you up to speed quickly!

Popular Styles of Bachata

Traditional Bachata

Also referred to as Authentic Bachata or Dominican Bachata, this is the style of bachata you’d see danced in the Dominican Republic itself.

Emphasising quick syncopated footwork and strong connection to the melodies within the music, Traditional Bachata can at first seem daunting but allows great freedom of expression for the individual dancer.

Modern Bachata

The most common styles of bachata you may see out on the dance floor! Fusion, Urban or Club Style bachata (among other names) is the modernised version of bachata incorporating elements from other dance styles as it left the Dominican Republic in the 90s

The Island Touch bachata that we teach on Thursdays is a fusion style, featuring  Traditional, Modern and Sensual influences to give you the best foundation for your dance journey!

(Often referred to as “Moderna” to signify modern influences, Bachata Moderna is actually a specific style pioneered by Juan Ruiz, key organiser of the world’s first Bachata Festival – in Sydney, Australia!)

Bachata Sensual

Developed in Spain by Korke and Judith over 15 years ago, Bachata Sensual is the youngest of the major styles, but rapidly becoming the most popular

Longer movements, sensual body isolations and theatrical musicality emphasise bachata’s passionate roots, while providing great material for social media!

Our level 2 classes mix in Bachata Sensual techniques and patterns to build your dance vocabulary further
